During your job interview, you would like to make a memorable first impression. Of course, it is important that this impression is a positive one! But how do you ensure this? In this article you will find out what you absolutely must avoid during your job interview.

1. Arriving late

Arriving late for your interview will come across as disrespectful. It also shows poor planning. So make sure you are on time, with some leeway for unforeseen circumstances. Are you still threatening to be late? Then contact the interviewer as soon as possible to inform them and ask whether the interview can still take place or whether the appointment should be rescheduled.

2. Being unprepared

Knowing about the company and the role you are applying for is a must. It shows not only your interest, but also your willingness to invest in a potential future with the organisation. If you haven't read up, you come across as uninterested and may seem like you don't actually want the job.

3. Negativity

Never speak negatively about previous employers or colleagues. It is unprofessional and it also gives a negative view of your character. Of course, you can be honest about why you left a previous employer, but always keep it clean.

4. Interrupting

Being enthusiastic during an interview is only a good thing! However, it is important to let the interviewer finish talking. Interrupting someone in the middle of a sentence or story can come across as impatient or rude.

5. Exaggerating

Stay authentic and true to yourself. A job interview is not an acting performance. Exaggerated behaviour or answers can come across as unreal.
